Timken ball bearings are out of this world

November 28, 2016 By Mike Santora

In 2009, when the Hubble telescope was in need of important repairs, ATK’s Mini Power Tool equipped with Timken custom thin-section precision ball bearings, engineered especially for the application’s unique requirements, helped to enable the crucial repairs to return the Hubble telescope to active duty.

The Hubble Telescope need many crucial repairs back in 2009 before returning to active dutey. A mini power tool, using Timken precision ball bearings, was used by astronauts to unfasten dozens of screws and replace circuit boards on the telescope’s advanced camera—all while orbiting the Earth at 17,500 mph.

Customized specifically for the application’s unique requirements, Timken engineered these miniature bearings to achieve smooth operation and extreme operating temperatures in space. Thanks to these critical repairs seven years ago, the Hubble Telescope was able to continue its mission and take the images that revealed 10 times more galaxies than originally thought.
