These are the bearings that helped drill the world’s longest rail tunnel

The Gotthard Base Tunnel, connecting Zurich to Milan, opened earlier this month after 17 years of construction.  The primary obstacle for the project? The 95 miles of granite that lie between the two cities. To help a tunnel boring machine chew through that much earth, 130 bearings were used on the machines cutter face. In this video we see how the bearings helped connect the two European cities.
