Why are multiple single-row taper roller bearings sometimes paired together?

Single row tapered roller bearings can accommodate radial load and axial load in one direction. Two single row tapered bearings are paired in opposing directions to each other to simplify setting of the proper clearance between them and can handle radial load and axial loads in either direction.
