Bearings for use in severe environments: a guide

September 27, 2017 By Mike Santora

Emerson-bearing-logo-imageOne significant and common issue in manufacturing and processing is premature bearing failure in equipment. The failure of bearings is often due to the severe environment in which they operate, and Emerson Bearing Boston offers a solution.

Catering to Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) and Maintenance, Repair and Operations (MRO) markets around the world, Emerson Bearing Boston has developed the guide, “Bearings for Use in Severe Environments” in which they discuss the most common severe environments, including high temperature, high-speed and chemical corrosion environments, to be mindful in order to prevent bearing failures.

In standard applications, a bearing will most often successfully reach its predicted “B10 life”, which is known as the point at which 10 percent of a given bearing product is expected to fail. In applications with severe environments, bearings are statistically more likely to fail.

“The way in which a bearing fails is often indicative of the cause of the failure. If you know what to look for, symptoms of certain types of failure can be identified before an actual failure occurs,” explained Steve Katz, president of Emerson Bearing.

Severe environments include those in food processing, and plastic processing and forming industries, where conditions that contribute to the premature failure of the bearing include chemical, submerged or wash-down environments, vibrating or impact environments and those with high or low temperatures.

Katz continued, “Knowing which bearings are best in regard to the type of severe environment will essentially save valuable production time, as customers will be able to easily select more suitable bearing products as replacements.”

In addition to their extensive resources provided online, Emerson Bearing experts can assist in determining which bearing technologies would be most suitable by taking into consideration the specifications, recommendations, maintenance strategies, fatigue life and wear resistance of bearings in relation to the application.
